Psalms 115:4-9
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.
"Why trust people who lack wisdom and direction? Their leadership is like the blind leading the blind. To be wise is to recognize when people around you lack these simple qualities.
Hands, feet, eyes, ears, mouths..."--Rev. R.L. DeBlanc
The psalmist confronts people who worship idols and in doing so lack the simple yet complex capabilities of these crucial parts of the body. The psalmist does not want you to overlook these crucial parts. I believe he wants you to recognize the common ground these five senses hold. Humans use them every day, right? Therefore, he pinpoints the five senses purposefully. He wants us to see how dysfunctional these idolaters (idol-worshippers) are. You need your hands to help people. You use your hands and feet to follow God's path and to work out what God wants you to do [remember an idle mind is the devil's workshop]. You need eyes to watch and discern throughout your life. Certain situations in life could make or break you so protecting your eyes is vital. What goes in always comes out. You need your ears to hear God's voice. You need to be in God's Word [with your eyes], only then will you truly understand what God has for you. Your nose and tongue work together to "taste and see that the Lord is good" as Psalm 34:8 encourages.
The psalmist encourages us to trust in God who is our help and shield. Throughout Psalms it mentions that you should trust God. As much as our five senses are important they should not be what we rely on all the time. God is much bigger than what our senses give Him credit for. You must allow God to speak for Himself. God only speaks life. He speaks goodness, grace, mercy, faith, and hope. He is the source for all change and He tenderly waits with arms outstretched to receive you. Never be ashamed of the gospel. It is what God uses to speak to each one of His children. Never be ashamed to be a Christian. When you accept God's free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, you have instantly become a child of a truly eternal King. If you are ashamed of God, God will be ashamed of you (Luke 9:26). Study to be quiet. God does not want your life to be stormy, noisy, and busy. Why do you think Jesus told the sea to be still? Sometimes it's important to be quiet; only then will you hear God's still, small voice like Elijah did on Mount Horeb (read the entire chapter for clarification).
In everything, ask God to give you direction on when and how you should react to certain situations. Trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5). He is our help and our shield (Psalm 33:20). He is our very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). He knows what we need even before we ask (Matthew 6:8).
In reality, some people are not born with these physical qualities. Perhaps they were born with some sort of defect. Their arms were too short for their body; they were born blind; they had no arms; their nose was crooked. It doesn't always mean they are crippled mentally. I have always believed that some of the smartest people are people born without normal capabilities. Why? I think it's because some of them have learned to accept the way they were made more quickly. They may learn to rely on someone, or something greater than themselves.
In our case, we should rely on God.
Think about it.
